He faces off against an incredibly powerful ninja entity by the name of "Pain." Pain has individual bodies and each vessel is capable of unique ninja skills that complement each other. As well, they possess the Rinnegan, which is supposedly the supreme eyes of the ninja world that can learn ALL ninja techniques through sight. They interact with each other through chakra rods placed all over their bodies like piercings. And each individual body can see what every other vessel sees so they can coordinate attacks very efficiently by watching over each others' blind spots...

... Onto the hermit's death..... He enters Sage mode in order to be match for Pain. Unfortunately, he does not realize that as long as the main body is alive, Pain cannot die. When is guard is lowered, one of the Pains stabs his throat with a large dagger and sends him to a watery grave. The old man; however, managed to identify a clue in his battle with Pain and before dying, he orders his messenger frog to deliver an urgent message to Konoha. In the message is a hint about Pain's origins and a means to combat him.

He's also an insane scientist who desires immortality and has conducted experiments on countless innocent lives. He had an obsession for Sasuke's body and that makes him a morbid, pedophile. Well he transforms into a giant, white snake first and swallows Sasuke into some alternate dimension within his gut. Sasuke cuts his way out (ouch). Snake man dies.
